Elvatech ProSpector 2 LE handheld XRF analyzer for routine PMI
ProSpector 2 • Established solution

Elvatech ProSpector 2 — handheld XRF for routine PMI

The ProSpector 2 is the established solution for routine PMI: fast alloy identification, ruggedness and ease of use. It suits stainless and tool steels, nickel, titanium, copper, cobalt and aluminium alloys and many engineering materials, with an LE configuration that extends coverage to lighter elements.

  • Application: routine PMI, fast alloy identification
  • Standard range: Cl (Z17) → U (Z92)
  • LE range: Mg (Z12) → U (Z92)
  • Build: rugged and simple
  • Materials: stainless / tool steels, Ni, Ti, Cu, Co, Al alloys
  • Use: incoming control, production, maintenance

ProSpector 2 versions: standard (Cl–U), LE (Mg–U, light elements).

Identified materials

Metals and alloys Elvatech XRF analyzers recognise.

Elvatech XRF analyzers identify a wide range of industrial metals and alloys, supporting quality control, supplier verification and material traceability.

Steels

Stainless steels of the 200/300/400 series, carbon and low-alloy steels, tool steels (HSS).

Nickel and cobalt alloys

Nickel alloys and superalloys, cobalt alloys: grade identification for critical, high-temperature assets.

Titanium and aluminium

Titanium, aluminium and magnesium alloys, with light-element coverage in the dedicated configurations.

Copper, brasses and bronzes

Copper, brasses and bronzes, zinc: composition verification for foundry, metalwork and recycling.

Refractory alloys

Refractory alloys based on tungsten (W), molybdenum (Mo), tantalum (Ta) and niobium (Nb).

Filler metals and ferroalloys

Welding filler metals and ferroalloys, for control of consumables and semi-finished products.

This product page details the technology described on the XRF/PMI material analysis page. See also the guide how to choose a portable XRF analyzer and other technologies: industrial radiography and industrial ultrasonic testing.

Technical note

XRF does not measure carbon.

Intrinsic limit of the XRF technique

XRF determines the elemental composition of the material, but does not measure carbon (C). As a result, alloy grades that differ only by carbon content — for example 304 vs 304L or 316 vs 316L — cannot be reliably distinguished by XRF alone. These cases require complementary techniques (e.g. spark/OES spectrometry). PITECH helps define the correct method based on the required control.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions on Elvatech XRF analyzers

What is the difference between ProSpector 3 and ProSpector 2?

The ProSpector 3 is the latest generation, with a high-performance SDD detector, low detection limits, 1.05 kg with battery and up to 16 h runtime with hot-swap battery; it covers from S (Z16) or Mg (Z12) up to U (Z92) depending on configuration. The ProSpector 2 is the established solution for routine PMI, with Cl (Z17)–U (Z92) range or Mg (Z12)–U (Z92) in the LE version.

Which materials do Elvatech XRF analyzers identify?

Stainless steels (200/300/400 series), carbon and low-alloy steels, tool steels (HSS), nickel, titanium, cobalt, aluminium, magnesium and copper alloys (brasses and bronzes), zinc, superalloys, refractory alloys (W, Mo, Ta, Nb), filler metals and ferroalloys.

Does XRF measure carbon?

No. XRF determines elemental composition but does not measure carbon (C). Therefore grades that differ only by carbon content, such as 304 vs 304L or 316 vs 316L, cannot be reliably distinguished by XRF alone.

Is Elvatech XRF analysis non-destructive?

Yes. XRF measurement verifies chemical composition and alloy grade in seconds without altering the component and without destructive sample preparation, so it suits incoming control, finished parts and in-service verification.
